    I chose to compete not for validation, but for accountability. Competition gave me a clear benchmark and a reason to measure my progress against others in the West Coast Swing community. It set a standard that pushed me to refine my technique, my preparation, and my mindset. Competing keeps me honest about where I am and where I still need to grow.

  • The WCS DJ

    Becoming a West Coast Swing DJ deepened my understanding of music in ways that transformed both my dancing and my teaching. As a DJ, I began to hear music structurally, recognizing phrasing, downbeats, rhythm layers, and how energy builds and releases over time. Music provides the framework for interaction between partners, and DJ-ing sharpened my awareness of how dancers respond to that framework.

  • The Instructor

    My transition from dancer to instructor was a natural extension of being a committed student. Continuing to learn keeps me closely connected to what students actually need at each stage of their journey. I understand confusion, frustration, and breakthrough because I experience them myself. That awareness informs how I teach.

    Being a West Coast Swing dance partner has taught me lessons about communication, consent, and responsibility that extend far beyond the dance floor. Partnership requires awareness, patience, and respect. A clear lead is not about control; it is about providing information that allows both dancers to succeed.
