Using Momentum Instead of Fighting It: The Secret to Better West Coast Swing

Why Using Momentum Changes Everything

One lesson transformed my dancing more than any pattern ever could. Using Momentum taught me to stop forcing movement and start working with natural energy. As a teacher and student, I still return to this principle every week. Consequently, every dance feels smoother, more connected, and far more enjoyable. The best dancers rarely appear to work hard because they trust movement instead of resisting it.

Using Momentum Creates Better Connection

Many dancers accidentally interrupt movement by pulling, pushing, or rushing their partners. However, momentum already provides much of the energy needed for the next action. Therefore, your job becomes to guide that energy rather than replacing it. As you learn to recognize natural flow, your connection becomes lighter. Moreover, your partner immediately notices the difference because communication feels clearer and far more comfortable.

Stop Working Harder Than Necessary

I often remind students that effort and effectiveness are not the same thing. Instead, efficient movement produces better results with less strain. Likewise, waiting for the right moment often creates more power than forcing the next pattern. This mindset improves timing, balance, and musicality together. As a result, both partners move with greater confidence while enjoying every song more completely.

Trust the Dance and Keep Learning

Learning to trust momentum requires patience, awareness, and consistent practice. Nevertheless, every social dance offers another opportunity to improve. I still discover new lessons whenever I dance with someone different. That curiosity keeps my own dancing evolving. Eventually, you stop thinking about individual techniques and simply respond to the music. When that happens, West Coast Swing becomes less about effort and much more about connection.
